Vasquez Guides Bahamian Squall Filly to Wire with a Little Magic

Bahamian Squall edged a little closer to his first million-dollar season when Island Magic made a stunning “first to last” run to win the second race at Gulfstream Park yesterday.

Red-hot Miguel Vasquez, who is the best in South Florida at getting his mounts to the finish line first from seemingly impossible distances, was aboard the 4-year-old filly in the race at five furlongs over the Tapeta surface. Island Magic broke in mid-pack, dropped back to last in the six-filly field, moved five wide on the turn and ran down the leaders late to win by a length in :58.02.

It was the third victory for the filly bred by Gator Island Racing, and her first this year. She added $13,500 to her bank account, which jumped to $51,257, gave Bahamian Squall winner No. 21, and increased his progeny earnings for the year to $837,498.
