Spirit Wind closed out her 4-year-old racing season on Dec. 21 of 2023 by winning the Gr. III Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park. On Saturday, she closed out her 5-year-old campaign by capturing the $150,000 Poinsettia Stakes at Oaklawn Park, and adding $85,500 to her bank account, which is easily best of all the sons and daughters of Bahamian Squall.
With Fernando Jara aboard, Spirit Wind sat a close-up third down the backstretch in the race at 5 1/2 furlongs. He swung her out wide entering the stretch and Spirit Wind proved to be best by three-quarters of a length, clocked in 1:04.28. Spirit Wind, bred by Ocala’s Jacks or Better Farm, increased her earnings to $729,590 on a record of 8-3-2 in 16 starts, with $367,150 coming in 2024.
Bahamian Squall has eight days left to earn a little more than $10,000 to reach $1 million for 2024.
