Maryquitecontrary raised her imposing record to four victories and a second in five starts with a strong come-from-behind score yesterday in a $55,000 overnight handicap at Gulfstream Park.
The 3-year-old daughter of First Dude, owned and bred by Rod Lundock, earned a check of $33,700 for her 2 1/2-length victory, accomplished in 1:23.20 for the seven furlongs. That brought her total to $144,830, best among First Dude’s runners this year.
Maryquitecontrary, who didn’t race at two, has won three in a row following a second-place finish in the $65,000 Sheer Drama Stakes. Her check increased First Dude’s 2022 progeny earnings to $1,916,958 as he heads for his seventh straight season over $2 million.
Luca Panici was aboard Maryquitecontrry, and he settled her in mid-pack down the backstretch. When Panici asked her to run on the turn, the talented filly looped the field in a matter of seconds, took the lead into the stretch and drew out without opposition nearing the wire.
Meanwhile, it took a track-record performance to defeat Double Diamonds’ Running Memories in a $55,000 handicap at Gulfstream. The 4-year-old filly by Bahamian Squall set a torrid pace in the 5 1/2-furlong test over the Tapeta course, putting up fractions of :22.49, :44.92 and :56.27 before being overtaken in the final sixteenth by Poseidon’s Warrior, who lowered the track record to 1:02.60.
Running Memories sports a record of 8-3-1 in 17 starts, and added $11,480 to her bank account, which now stands at $291,660, best of all Bahamian Squall’s runners.
