Maryquitecontrary, First Dude’s second leading money-winner, went over the $700,000 mark in career earnings Sunday after finishing in a dead heat for second in a $75,000 handicap at Gulfstream Park.
The 5-year-old mare owned and bred by longtime Ocala veterinarian Rod Lundock was off last in a field of nine going a mile and 70 yards over the Tapeta surface. Coming to the final turn, rider Edgard Zayas took her three wide, and Maryquitecontrary swung into mid-track entering the stretch. Moving fastest of all down the lane, she caught the leaders nearing the wire, but fell three-quarters of a length short of 19-1 winner No Valla while dead-heating for the place with 6/5 favorite Sand and Sea, the pacesetter.
Maryquitecontrary collected a check for $11,650, raising her total to $703,142 on a record of 7-5-3 in 19 tries. Although she hasn’t won this year in seven starts, with a pair of seconds and three thirds she’s earned $103,337.
