No matter what transpires for the rest of her racing career, Island Magic will always have the distinction of having a track record listed on her resume, although it may be for the shortest reign in history.
The 3-year-old daughter of Bahamian Squall entered the gate at 1:29 yesterday for the third race at Gulfstream Park. With Angel Arroyo riding, she went wire-to-wire in the race at ‘about’ 5 1/2 furlong over the new Tapeta track, winning by 1 1/4 lengths. Her clocking of 1:05.47 was immediately listed as a track record by Equibase, best for the several weeks that the all-weather surface has been in use, and she received her highest ‘E’ speed rating, a 72.
However, two races later, Cuy, a 4-year-old gelding, took off at 2:29 at the same distance and won by 6 1/4 lengths, while lowering the record to 1:03.41.
Island Magic has run just five times, so she’ll have plenty of chances to regain the record. She’s 2-1-0 in those races, and the $17,200 winner’s check raised her earnings to $30,825. The filly bred by Gator Island Racing has won two of her last three and paid $22.
