After her last start – which was her first on Gulfstream Park’s Tapeta surface – proved to be the right medicine for Lady Emily, it stood to reason that trainer J. Kent Sweezey would be looking for a follow-up race over the all-weather track for the 4-year-old daughter of First Dude.
Sweezey found the right spot for the filly owned and bred by Donald Dizney in Gulfstream’s seventh race yesterday, and Lady Emily turned in the “last to first” performance that track announcers are so fond of reporting.
With Junior Alvarado in the saddle, Lady Emily galloped along leisurely at the back of the pack early in the race at a mile and 70 yards. When Alvarado asked her for her best, the filly swung off the inside and made up 10 lengths from the turn home, as Pete Aiello told the Hallandale Beach crowd, Lady Emily “runs by them all.” She prevailed by 2 1/2 lengths, paid $9.60 and earned $29,300 plus a breeder’s award for Double Diamond. She now sports a record of 3-0-0 in 8 starts with earnings of $81,130.
