After headline writers’ nemesis Hoorayhoorayhooray finished second in three of his first four starts at Gulfstream Park, it didn’t appear as though the 3-year-old gelding by Bahamian Squall would remain in the maiden ranks much longer. He resolved that problem in yesterday’s fourth race, a $53,000 maiden special weights test at seven furlongs.
With Hector Berrios aboard, Hoorayhoorayhooray broke on top from the No. 6 post, dropped back to a stalking position in third place down the backstretch, went three wide after the two leading favorites coming to the turn, then powered past both in the stretch to score by three lengths in 1:26 flat.
Hoorayhoorayhooray, who was bred by breeder/trainer Milton Wolfson, became Bahamian Squall’s fourth winner in January. He paid $8.40 while earning a check for $31,800, raising his total to a healthy $60,820, an average of $12,164 per race for his five starts.
