Hay Hay Paula has raced 17 times at Gulfstream Park, and as she approaches her sixth year, she’s in the process of putting together the best few months of her career.
The 5-year-old daughter of Bahamian Squall has run up a record of 6-1-3, and half of her victories have come in her last four races. With Gabriel Maldonado aboard in the latest at a mile and 70 yards over the Tapeta course, Hay Hay Paula was off fourth at the break and raced there down the backstretch about six lengths off the pace. She began to move as they neared the turn and never left the inside. When the leaders swung wide into the stretch, Hay Hay Paula slipped through on the inside and bolted to the lead, drawing off to win by nearly three lengths in 1:42.54.
The mare bred by Pam Edel collected a check for $13,600, and increased her career bank account to $113,280.
