After recording three seconds and three thirds in his previous six races, it was no surprise that Debonnaire Dude was the even-money choice of the Delta Downs players in the sixth race last night. And with Joel Dominguez riding, the 5-year-old First Dude gelding bred by Lynne and Chris Boutte overcame a four-wide trip to capture the 6 1/2-furlong test by 1 1/2 lengths.
Debonnaire Dude was off quickly from the No. 9 post and joined three others from the four path in the dash down the backstretch. He began picking off one after another and took the lead on the turn, then held it all the way to the wire for his fifth lifetime score, clocked in 1:22.02. The victory was worth $6,600 and left First Dude just over $30,000 from reaching the $23 million mark in career progeny earnings. He has 52 winners in 2022.
