Bahamian Squall Gelding Has It All Under Control in Surprising Debut

Based on five mediocre works leading up to his Tampa Bay Downs debut on Tuesday, it seemed as though Raydar Control would go off as one of the long shots in the $25 claiming race at 5 1/2 furlongs. But the 2-year-old Bahamian Squall gelding, a mysterious 3-1 on the morning line, was sent off at 6-1 with Alex Gonzalez aboard.

Breaking from the No. 3 post,  Raydar Control was off a step slow, but Gonzalez quickly guided him through on the rail, and the gelding bred by D. Michelle Landry took the lead in a :22.51 quarter. He continued on in front, opening up daylight on the turn, then put it in overdrive down the lane, winning by 6 1/4 widening lengths. He was clocked in 1:04.39, paid $14.40, and earned a check for $13,300 for a most impressive debut.
