Bahama Pearl executed her own best imitation of Secretariat in the Belmont Stakes in a 5 1/2-furlong race at Parx, getting her second victory in eight starts this year.
With apprentice Matilda Burnham in the saddle, the 7-year-old Bahamian Squall mare sat three lengths off the pace early down the backstretch, and when her young rider asked for her best, Bahama Pearl inhaled the leaders on the turn, then cruised to victory by what Equibase called 8 3/4 lengths but what looked to the naked eye to be much greater.
The mare bred by Shade Tree Thoroughbreds and Joyce Corwin paid $5.40 and earned a check for $10,800, lifting her lifetime total to $154,767 on a record of 6-10-10 in 48 tries. She’s 2-4-4-2 in her last 13 starts.
