Baby Ice’s racing life is another tale that has emulated that of the legendary Arkansas Traveler, spending her first 36 races at Santa Anita, Del Mar, Los Alamitos, Gulfstream Park and Gulfstream West. Along the way, the 7-year-old daughter of First Dude has been in so many barns for so many owners and trainers she probably can’t remember which is which.
After outing No. 36 at Gulfstream on Dec. 10 of last year, Baby Ice wound up in another barn, and when she returned in May after five months off, she was up north for the first time – at Parx Racing. Yesterday, in her fifth try over the main track, the mare bred by Y-Lo Racing Stables boosted her record in Philly to 2-1-0 with a 4 1/4-length victory under Jorge Gonzalez, getting six furlongs in 1:12.04.
Ironically, despite her long history of claims, there were two taken in the race, and Baby Ice wasn’t one of them. She paid $12.60 and earned $10,800, which raised her career total to $152,335 on a record of 8-7-5 in 41 starts.
