Monmouth Park’s track announcer, Frank Mirahmadi, hit the nail right on the head as Baby Ice was drawing away from the field down the stretch in yesterday’s ninth race. “As Baby Ice absolutely clobbers the field,” was the way Mirahmadi described the runaway victory of the 7-year-old daughter of First Dude bred by Y-Lo Racing.
It marked the third straight score for Baby Ice, who paid $4.20 and raised her record to 10-7-5 in 43 starts, the first one at Parx by 4 1/4 lengths and the last two with Paco Lopez at Monmouth, by a neck and 6 3/4 lengths.
Lopez hustled Baby Ice out quickly in the 6-furlong test, and she took up a position in third place outside the pace-setter. She moved up to second quickly as they hit the quarter in :22.41, went up for the lead on the turn, and was in front in :45.87 and going away as they reached the stretch. Her final time was 1:11 flat and she earned a check for $15,000, increasing her total to $184,135 as she strives to join First Dude’s $200,000-plus club, which currently stands at 18.
