The new Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park has only been in use for a few weeks, so track records at every distance are constantly being lowered. Cindy’s Song, a 2-year-old filly by First Dude, now owns the record for ‘about’ 1 1/16 miles on the all-weather surface.
The $95,000 OBS June purchase broke her maiden yesterday in her third start with Chantal Sutherland in the irons, becoming winner No. 57 for First Dude in 2021, at the same time giving the son of Stephen Got Even an even 100 winning races for the year.
Cindy’s Song broke well from the No. 8 post and was quickly engaged in a battle for the lead with Gossiping, who was on her inside. The battle lasted until the turn for home, when Sutherland edged Cindy’s Song into the lead, and she held it to the wire, holding off fast-closing 9/5 favorite Radiant Gem by a neck in 1:45.07, now the track record.
The filly bred by Ponder Hill paid $12.20 and earned a check for $19,600, raising First Dude’s progeny earnings to $2,296,945, third best among Florida’s stallions.
