At the 2019 OBS October yearling sale, Shelley Brown purchased Orange Theory for a bargain $3,000. The 48-year-old Canadian has been able to hang onto the 3-year-old First Dude filly through all of her 18 races, and last night, at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino in Alberta, Orange Theory won for her cancer-stricken owner/trainer for the third time.
With Rafael Zenteno Jr. riding, Orange Theory stalked early pacesetter Royal Status in the two-path through early fractions of :23.16 and :46.43. She surged past the 8/5 favorite and took the lead heading into the stretch and won going away by 4 1/2 lengths in 1:24.51 for the seven furlongs, paying $6.40.
It was the second victory in her last three starts for the filly, who earned a check for $8,021 in U. S. dollars and raised her total to $40,226 on a record of 3-2-6 in her 18 tries, despite the minute purse structure in Western Canada. She received an 82 ‘E’ speed figure from Equibase, her best ever.
Gutsy Shelley Brown was given three to six months to live by her doctors a year ago, but so far has bucked the diagnosis, and Orange Theory has helped keep her spirits up.
