After winning the fifth race at Prairie Meadows yesterday, Ragatagtag collected a check for $9,300, raising her career total to $143,028. Not bad for a mare who was a $4,000 RNA as a yearling at the OBS October sale in 2017.
The 5-year-old daughter of First Dude, bred by Adam and Suzette Parker at T-Square Stud, now sports a record of 7-8-3 in 27 starts, and is 3-3-0 in 10 tries this season. Along the way, she even played a small role in trainer Steve Asmussen’s victories record of the last few days. The new record-holder claimed Ragatagtag for $5,000 at Fair Grounds on Jan. 29, then won a $7,500 claimer with her first-time back at Oaklawn Park on April 2, losing her the same day to Poindexter Thoroughbreds, who still owns her.
With Elvin Gonzalez aboard, even-money favorite Ragatagtag broke well from the No.1 post in yesterday’s $15,500 starter allowance at six furlongs, then slipped through on the inside to take the lead en route to a quarter in :22.87. There she took up battle with Mulberry, who remained glued to her side through a half in :45.27 and five furlongs in :57.20, before putting away the 3/2 second choice inside the eighth pole and going on to score by nearly five lengths.
Ragatag was clocked in 1:09.79 for the six furlongs and paid $4.20. Since claiming her, Ragatagtag is 2-2-0-1 in seven starts for Poindexter.
