Weekend Begins With a Bang for First Dude

First Dude had 10 runners of various ages compete at five tracks on Friday and Saturday, and he wound up with two winners, three seconds, a third and a fourth. Nearly 40 percent of his runners this year have finished in the top three, and his progeny earnings recently passed $600,000 for the season and $19 million lifetime.

Winking At Thedude became First Dude’s 23rd winner of 2021 Saturday with a sharp victory at Mahoning Valley. The $9,000 winner’s check lifted his career total to $187,493 as he bids to become the 19th member of his sire’s $200,000-plus club, a goodly return considering he was purchased for $17,000 at Timonium in May of 2017. The 6-year-old gelding sports a record of 5-10-5 in 30 starts and he put First Dude just four winners behind leading sire Khozan among Florida’s stallions.

With Luis Rivera aboard, Winking At Thedude was away eighth in a field of nine going a flat mile, and Rivera deftly moved him up to fifth on the rail down the backstretch. The gelding bred by Dee-Ellen Cook and Suzette Parker came between horses on the turn, ran down Sammy’s Mineshaft in mid-stretch and was hand-ridden to the wire 2 1/2 lengths ahead of the 6/5 favorite.

At Gulfstream Park, C’mon Karen made it 2-for-2 with Rajiv Maragh following her maiden-breaking score in her career debut on March 21. The 3-year-old filly bred by Steve Tucker came from eight lengths behind down the backstretch after a quarter in :21.99, made a four-wide move on the turn and rolled over 4/5 favorite Briella late, clocked in 1:11.85 for the six furlongs. The $20,000 winner’s check boosted the two-race total of the $15,000 OBS April 2-year-old to $40,100.
