Starship Apollo captured the fifth race at Gulfstream Park yesterday, the 16th time he has visited the winner’s circle during a 65-race career in Florida which began in 2015.
The 8-year-old gelding bred by Leverett and Linda Miller is No. 1 on First Dude’s winner’s list, followed by 5-year-old Rogue Too, who has won 11 times and a week ago became his sire’s 18th winner with earnings in excess of $200,000. The Millers sold Starship Apollo for $27,000 at the OBS Winter Sale in 2014.
The gelding earned a check for $12,800, raising his career total to $263,955, 14th best on First Dude’s $200,000-plus list. He has seven seconds and nine thirds to go along with his 16 victories.
Paco Lopez had Starship Apollo sitting in a perfect stalking position heading down the backstretch in the 6 1/2-furlong race, and sent him after 6/5 favorite Weisser on the turn. He assumed the lead at the top of the stretch and continued on to score by 1 1/4 lengths, paying $10.60 and getting the distance in 1:17.34.
Starship Apollo has won 13 of his 16 races at Gulfstream Park, and the other three at Gulfstream West.
