Apprentice rider Sara Hess showed up for the meeting at Tampa Bay Downs last week with 20 winning rides under her belt, and made it 21 with a gutsy effort on Singsational on opening day. She quickly made it 22 by taking He’s Side Eyed wire-to-wire on day 2, holding on gamely to win a three-horse photo and paying a juicy $51.
It was the first start for He’s Side Eyed, a 2-year-old First Dude gelding whose three works of 50 breezing at Starting Point Training Center apparently didn’t impress the bettors. He clicked off fractions of :22.81, :45.97 and :58.57 en route to a final time of 1:12.07 for the six furlongs. The gelding bred by Julie Jackson earned a check for $12,100.
