First Dude Enjoys Memorable (Record-Breaking?) Day

Equibase doesn’t keep records for this, but it’s possible – and probable – that First Dude set a North American record yesterday. The stallion by Stephen Got Even had three runners entered at different tracks and all three won in a span of 29 minutes. Pretty impressive.

Off at 12:58 – Thistledown: Dudes Lawyer, after a four-month layoff, returned with a second-place finish, and has now won two in a row after her wire-to-wire triumph yesterday racing six furlongs under Yarmarie Correa. The 5-year-old mare bred by Good Beginnings Farm won by half a length in 1:12.22 and earned a check for $7,812, raising her total to $49,162 on a record of 4-3-3 in 16 starts. She paid $11.20 and received a 73 ‘E’ speed figure, best of her career.

Off at 1:05 – Belterra Park: Victoria’s Dancer also returned after a long layoff – 8 months – and won first time back in a race that came off the grass and went at five furlongs on the main track. The 4-year-old filly bred by Sally Andersen, a $1,200 OBS October yearling, was off slowly, then made a four-wide run on the turn that resulted in a 1 3/4-length victory in 1:01.25. She paid $23.60 and collected $8,640 for her second victory, lifting her total to $25,748 for five starts.

Off at 1:27 – Parx Racing: Petulant Delight was an overwhelming favorite with Dexter Haddock, sent off at 3/10 in a race at seven furlongs and he more than lived up to the bettors’ confidence. The 7-year-old gelding bred by Ocala Stud Farm, a $37,000 OBS April 2-year-old, was head-and-head for the lead early, then gradually increased the margin and was 11 1/4 lengths in front at the wire, clocked in 1:24.67 with Haddock standing in the irons for the final 50 yards. He paid $2.60, collected a check for $10,800, and is 9-7-4 in 36 starts with earnings of $182,029, no doubt soon to be added to the $200,000 club of First Dude, who now boasts of 32 winners this year.
