Sweet Nola raced 23 times prior to Friday, but for her the charm was No. 24.
The 5-year-old daughter of First Dude went wire-to-wire in a seven-furlong test at Tampa Bay Downs and registered her best Equibase ‘E’ speed figure of 86. With Sam Marin in the irons, Sweet Nola paid $18.60 after posting sizzling fractions of :22.99, :45.78 and 1:09.70 en route to an easy 4 1/4-length score in a final time of 1:22.47. The mare bred by Frank Mermenstein and Tom McCrocklin boosted her record to 4-5-1 and the winner’s check for $14,000 increased her earnings to $73,524.
